A bit of history

We are a family run business originally from Dudley in the Black Country, hence the name Dudley's and the link to the Black Country flag in our logo.

But there is a deeper connection to the name Dudley's that many won't be aware of and one of significant historic importance.

Black Country Day is celebrated on July 14th to recognise the historic importance of the invention of the first steam engine by Thomas Newcomen on this day in 1712. Thomas Newcomen was born and raised in Dartmouth. With his partner John Calley he built his first steam engine at Conygree Coalworks near Dudley and it was used to pump out the water from the deep mines in the area. This allowed them to extract more coal which fuelled the start of the Industrial Revolution.

A working replica of this engine can be seen at the Black Country Living Museum and there is also a display at the Dartmouth Visitor Centre and Dartmouth Museum.
